Chief Executive's Science Capital Blog

Now that Brexit is dawning, concrete steps are needed to ensure that the UK's leadership in science and innovation does not erode:

1. Please sign a petition to ensure that UK access to collaborative EU research is preserved. As Westminster botched telling the people about Brexit's impact, we now need the government to limit the damage. Your signature will make a difference (please circulate).

2. Tell the public about the impact of your research. Hats off toScience Capital presenter Farhat Khanim for her article in the Guardian. Also to Science Capital presenter Matthew Rhodes who leads on innovation for the West Midlands region, which has the ingredients to be the most entrepreneurial in the country.

3. Initiate an inclusive meeting to focus on a global challenge. Feel free to come to our 19th meeting: Innovative Healthcare 2016: from molecular to cellular therapeutics as we discuss design and delivery of novel agents through drug discovery partnerships, and invite you to present your new ideas and plans.

As the problems we face are becoming more complex and urgent, our ability to recognize a growing need and step up to the plate to inspire constructive change is too often rate-limiting. We're here to help and applaud your efforts. (4 Aug 2016)

We face a paradox – David Cameron is urging Birmingham to think big, impose a mayor, and bring in the Commonwealth Games. All fine, but we need a UK leader who can engage Europe constructively and support our region’s unique potential as the West Midlands Engine. Maybe even trump Trump on the world stage.

If we vote to leave the EU and our engine sputters out, we’re all in the soup. Your input is needed. Please attend a debate, voice your opinion, give an informed vote, and encourage your colleagues to do the same. (14 May 2016)
