Laura Piddock

Laura is the Professor of Microbiology at the University of Birmingham, where she serves as Deputy Director of the Institute of Microbiolgy and Infection. Laura is also the Director of Antibiotic Action and BSAC Chair in Public Engagement.

Her research focuses on antibiotic resistance. She seeks to determine how resistance develops and characterises the clinically relevant mechanisms including the systems that allow transport of antibiotics into and out of bacteria.

Laura has played an active role in the Society of Biology, American Academy of Microbiology, MRC Infections and Immunity Board, Wellcome Trust Expert Review Group on Pathogens and Transmissible Diseases and Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation Distinguished Award Committee.

Laura is an enthusiastic communicator about antibiotic resistance and the need for new antibacterial treatments. She gives talks to groups at local, national and international level. Laura frequently contributes to both the local and national media and has advised on, and appeared in, several documentaries.
