Nigel Brown

Nigel is the President of the Society for General Microbiology,and the Chair of Board and Trustee Director of The Genome Analysis Centre.

He is an Emeritus Professor of Molecular Microbiology at the University of Edinburgh, where he was Head of the College of Science and Engineering 2008-2011.

Nigel has been Chair for the Deans of Science and Engineering in Scotland since 2010. From 2004-2008 he was Director of Science and Technology at the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the largest public funder of agricultural and non-clinical biosciences in the UK, in which capacity he served on a number of UK science strategy bodies.

Prior to his appointment to BBSRC, he was Professor of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at the University of Birmingham, where his recent researches were on the interactions of bacteria with heavy metals. He is a Chartered Biologist and Chartered Chemist.
