Mike Griffiths

Mike is a Consultant Clinical Scientist and Director of the West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory at Birmingham Women’s Hospital. He is also Director of the Central England Haemato-oncology Research Biobank, and Professor in the School of Cancer Sciences at the University of Birmingham.

He studied Biochemistry at the University of Warwick, and then became a Forensic Biologist in London, before starting a professional genetics career as a clinical cytogeneticist at the Wessex Cytogenetics Unit in Salisbury in 1981. He subsequently moved to the West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory at Birmingham Women’s Hospital in 1985, where he has seen the department grow from 7 to more than 150 staff.

Mike has research interests across all of diagnostic medical genetics, but particularly haemato-oncology genetics, cancer genetics and related stratified medicine projects. He is one of the leads for the CRUK Stratified Medicine Programme Technology Hub in Birmingham; and also for two related Technology Strategy Board grants in collaboration with Affymetrix and with Oxford Gene Technology.
